Barber Spotlight: Maurice Miller

Barber Spotlight: Maurice Miller

This month we're shedding a special spotlight on the talented barber, shop owner, and Salon Centric hair educator, Maurice Miller. From the sunshine state of Jacksonville, FL, Maurice chatted with Agadir Men to better understand his inspirational career journey and some pieces of advice he has for future aspiring barbers.

Here's what we learned.

  • How long have you been in the barber industry?

I have been cutting hair since I was 13-years-old. At the age of 18, I started working in my first shop. I'm now 37-years-old, so you can do the math. :)

  • What inspired you to get into barbering?

My grandmother is my inspiration. She used to own her own salon in Gary, Indiana.

  • Can you walk us through your story of becoming a barber?

It chose me. When my grandfather passed away, the night before his funeral, I took it upon myself to cut his hair. I actually messed it up too. My grandmother was really upset and my mother had to fix it. The next day I spoke at his funeral. When I finished my speech, my grandmother made me sit next to her and she whispered in my ear, "This is what's going to feed you and your family for the rest of your life." This as a barber truly, and among other things, really has to this day.

  • What were some challenges you faced in your journey to becoming a barber?

I was a single father and in the military at one point in my life. Once I returned home from Iraq, I struggled for a long time. Eventually, I became homeless and struggled with PTSD from my time in the military. Barbering helped me on my journey and I found my peace with this.

  • What were some rewarding aspects in your journey?

Most would say the time and freedom. Mine is the art. The money is only a bi-product of loving and being able to perform the art.

  • What's your typical day like as a barber?

I own a salon, so it's a pretty long day. It typically starts at 5:00am with listening or reading some positive notes. I get to the shop about 10:00am and I normally have anywhere from five to nine clients a day --  seven days a week. My days usually end around 7:00pm so it's a long day.

  • Which hairstyle is your favorite to design?

My favorite hairstyle design is a high top fade.

  • Which Agadir Men product is your favorite?

My favorite Agadir Men product is the Oud Wood Hair & Body Wash. It has such a unique smell and leaves your hair and body feeling so clean.

  • Is there an Agadir Men product that's popular with your clients?

It's also the Oud Wood Hair & Body Wash. They absolutely love it.

  • What's a common question you get from clients? How do you solve them?

A question I commonly get is, "Can I use this product on my beard? What's a good product to wash my beard with?" I give their beards a wash with the Agadir Men Oud Wood Hair & Body Wash to show they can use the same product for both their body and beards.

  • What's your advice for future aspiring barbers?

Your connections are everything. Don't burn bridges. You can't go from zero to 10,000 in a month. It takes time, so be patient.

  • Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Trust your process. Your journey is not the next man's so enjoy yours. Life is about the dash in the middle of the year you are born and die. The dash is the success, so enjoy that part. It's the best part.
